Resident Evil Movie Faces Fan Backlash Despite Strong Reviews

The Resident Evil movie has arrived with strong critical attention, but director Zach Cregger has revealed that the reaction from some longtime fans has been far more difficult than he expected. The new horror film takes an original approach to Capcom’s hugely successful video game franchise, a decision that has created excitement among some viewers while leaving others questioning why the movie does not follow the games more closely.

Cregger, who previously directed the horror films Barbarian and Weapons, said he was not prepared for the level of criticism that followed the first trailer. He had expected fans to embrace a film that captured the atmosphere and experience of playing Resident Evil. Instead, some viewers immediately questioned the absence of familiar characters and other elements from the games.

Resident Evil Movie Takes an Original Route

The new Resident Evil movie does not retell one of Capcom’s established game campaigns. Instead, it introduces Bryan, an original character played by Austin Abrams.

Bryan works as a courier and accepts a delivery that takes him to a hospital in Raccoon City, one of the most recognizable locations in the franchise. What begins as a routine assignment quickly becomes a nightmare when he finds himself caught in the middle of a viral outbreak.

The character’s journey gives Cregger room to build a story that can stand on its own while still operating inside the world of Resident Evil. The director has repeatedly said that his goal was to reproduce the feeling of playing the games rather than simply recreate one of their plots on screen.

Why Fans Questioned the Reboot

The reaction became clearer after the movie’s first trailer was released.

Some fans asked why iconic characters were missing and why the film appeared to focus on a newcomer instead. The franchise has a large following built around recognizable figures, long-running storylines and an extensive mythology, so a fresh protagonist represented a significant creative gamble.

Cregger acknowledged that he had underestimated the response.

He said he had been “naive” in assuming that audiences would automatically be excited by a Resident Evil movie that respected the spirit of the games while telling a different story. His comments reflect a larger problem faced by filmmakers working with established video game properties: audiences often expect both creative freedom and close loyalty to the original source.

Those expectations can be difficult to satisfy at the same time.

Critics See Value in Cregger’s Approach

While fan reaction has been mixed, early reviews have generally been positive.

Several critics have praised the film for capturing the experience of playing a survival-horror game rather than simply borrowing its name. NME questioned whether the film could become one of the first major horror game adaptations to truly succeed, while The Jam Report praised Cregger’s approach as an act of translation instead of simple imitation.

Looper also highlighted the film’s ability to make the mechanics and tension of gaming feel cinematic. Those responses suggest that, from a critical perspective, Cregger’s decision to create an original story may be one of the film’s most important strengths.

The reaction from ordinary audiences remains a more complicated question. A successful review score does not necessarily guarantee that a franchise fan base will embrace a new interpretation.

Resident Evil Has a Complicated Movie History

The pressure surrounding the latest film is partly explained by the franchise’s history on screen.

Resident Evil first became a movie series in 2002, with Paul W.S. Anderson directing the original film and Milla Jovovich leading a six-film run. Those movies developed a dedicated following, but critics often responded negatively to them.

A different approach arrived with the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which attempted to stay more closely connected to the games. A Netflix series followed in 2022, but that project also failed to win broad critical enthusiasm.

The new movie therefore arrives with considerable baggage. Cregger is not simply making another horror film. He is entering a franchise whose previous adaptations have left audiences divided over how closely Hollywood should follow Capcom’s material.

Cregger Says He Cannot Please Everyone

Another unusual part of the discussion is Cregger’s relationship with Capcom.

The director told BBC Newsbeat that nobody from the game company contacted him directly during production. BBC Newsbeat also reported that there was coordination between Capcom and the film’s producers behind the scenes, although Constantin Film, which controls the live-action rights, declined to comment on the matter.

For Cregger, the central issue remains the same. He never intended to recreate a game exactly.

The filmmaker argues that even a faithful retelling could have disappointed audiences because any adaptation would inevitably change something that fans consider important. His solution was to concentrate on making what he believed was the strongest story possible.

That philosophy puts the responsibility directly on the movie itself.

The Box Office Will Add Another Test

The Resident Evil movie entered theaters on September 18, 2026, with strong early reviews and significant interest from both horror audiences and gaming fans. Coverage leading into release indicated that the movie was positioned for a substantial opening weekend.

For Cregger, however, commercial performance may only be part of the story. The larger question is whether audiences eventually accept his interpretation of the franchise.

The film has already demonstrated that a Resident Evil adaptation can generate attention without simply copying the games. Now viewers will decide whether Bryan’s story, Cregger’s horror style and the movie’s new take on Raccoon City are enough to earn a lasting place in the franchise.

For a series built around survival, the new Resident Evil movie may have one final challenge ahead: surviving the expectations of its own fans.
